#5- District 10-AA
This district offers a unique blend of mid-sized metro schools and a couple of private schools that compete at the Division I level. In what is generally considered David Lipscomb’s district to win, last year we saw James Stone pave the way for Maplewood to take a share of the district crown. With Stone out of the equation this season, David Lipscomb should be the favorites in this district once again. Mustangs’ running back William Officer returns after an impressive junior season. Following closely behind the two favorites should be the trio of Pearl-Cohn, Christ Presbyterian Academy (CPA), and Whites Creek. Pearl-Cohn is a team that really found its stride at the end of last season, and I expect that they will be tough this season with plenty of returning seniors. CPA plays a tough schedule and suffered some close losses last season, but I would expect that to result in a team with better finishing ability this season. Whites Creek introduces a new head coach in Mose Phillips, it should be interesting to see what kind of success he enjoys in his first season.

#4- Division II-AA
This division of private-school football is always fun to follow. The divisional play for schools in the mid-state for this classification includes games against two Chattanooga schools in Baylor and McCallie. While those programs are usually contenders, this season I believe the mid-state will feature the teams to beat. Brentwood Academy appears poised to rebound from what was considering a disappointing season by their lofty standards. Senior Derek King is a real playmaker. Ensworth lost two major contributors in Orleans Darkwa (Tulane) and Sam Cooper (Clemson), but they still have plenty of firepower. Antonio Richardson is probably the best player in the state, and he should open plenty of holes for sophomore running back Cornelius Elder. Montgomery Bell Academy (MBA) always fields a strong team, and I expect this season to be no different. Coach Daniel McGugin will be looking for a return to the Blue Cross Bowl in 2010. If Father Ryan can find a replacement at quarterback for Trey McPhail, they could repeat last season’s 8-4 record. Battle Ground Academy features a new head coach in Marty Euverard, a guy that had success at Oakland in the late 90’s.
Predicted Finish: 1- Brentwood Academy, 2- Montgomery Bell Academy, 3- Ensworth, 4- Father Ryan, 5- Baylor, 6- BGA, 7- McCallie, 8- Pope John Paul II
#3- District 9-AAA
The Beech Buccaneers may have been the surprise team of 2009, posting a 13-2 record and winning the 5A State Championship. This season, they won’t be surprising anyone. Considering they return over 75% of the starters from that championship team, expectations will be high. However, a repeat championship in 9-AAA is far from a sure thing. This district will most likely be a four team race, featuring Mt. Juliet, Hendersonville, and Gallatin. All four of these teams sported a record of 7-3 or better last season. Mt. Juliet returns a 6-foot-5 wide-out named Vaughn Cornelia that will be very hard to defend this season. Hendersonville showed how tough they were with signature wins over Riverdale and Gallatin last season, and returns several leaders from the 2009 roster. A three-point loss to Beech in the quarterfinals of the state tournament was a tough way for Gallatin to end their 2009 season, but expect a similarly tough Green Wave team in 2010.
Predicted Finish: 1- Beech, 2- Mt. Juliet, 3- Hendersonville, 4- Gallatin, 5- Lebanon, 6- Wilson Central, 7-Station Camp, 8- Portland
#2- District 11-AAA
Williamson County always shows up with quality high school football, and I’d expect more of the same from the teams competing in 11-AAA this season. If Coach Ron Crawford can revamp the Brentwood offense, I think you’ll see a repeat of their semi-final appearance in the 2009 state tournament. Franklin is a contender each season here, and don’t expect this year to be any different. Independence debuts a new head coach in former Tennessee Titan Kevin Dyson. Ravenwood returns only two starters on offense this season, and are a far cry from the State Championship team of a few years back. Hillsboro is still adjusting to their draw in this tough district. Expect improvement in 2010 though, as they return quite a few starters.
Predicted Finish: 1- Brentwood, 2- Franklin, 3- Independence, 4- Hillsboro, 5- Ravenwood, 6- Centennial
#1- District 7-AAA
If you listen to the show you may have guessed this. I make my opinion on this no secret: District 7-AAA plays the best football in the mid-state. A serious argument could be made for this being the toughest district in the whole state of Tennessee. In 2010, this district is once again going to produce a handful of state championship contenders, starting in Murfreesboro with the 2008 State Champion Oakland Patriots. Oakland returns over 40 seniors, and has two big-time playmakers in Buddy Mitchell and Tee Mayberry. Riverdale made a return to glory in the 2009 season with a deep playoff run, and they’ll have a shot to make another run in 2010. Blackman returns Jess Patton on a stout Blaze defense, and Coach Shadowens knows a thing or two about winning state titles. Smyrna, my darkhorse in this district, features the best offensive player in the league in Jeremiah Bryson. If Bryson and stand-out linebacker Deon Meadows stay healthy, this is a team that could make a deep run in the playoffs. Siegel and LaVergne are breaking in new coaches this season, and are largely unknowns going into this season.
